This course explores the role and responsibilities of personnel onboard ship with designated security duties. It introduces the ship security plan, examines ship security risks and threats and looks at the importance of regular security inspections.

Every seafarer who is designated to perform security duties, including anti-piracy and anti-armed-robbery-related activities, is required by the STCW Convention and Code to demonstrate competence to undertake these tasks, duties and responsibilities.

The purpose of this course is to give personnel onboard ship without a designated security duty the requisite knowledge needed to meet the requirements of Chapter VI of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended by the 2010 Manila amendments.

If you are to serve on ships to which the International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) Code applies you must hold a Security Awareness certificate (Section A-VI/6, paragraph 4 of the STCW Code, and STCW Code Table A-VI/6-1)

When the ISPS Code was introduced in 2004, most ships were required to have a Security Officer. The training requires that the Ship’s Security Officer (SSO) will maintain an effective security system on board working in conjunction with the Company Security Officer (CSO).

Onboard all ships which are required to comply with the provisions of the ISPS Code, a Ship Security Officer (SSO) must be designated. This Ship Security Officer onboard course has been designed to meet the requirements for training of these Ship Security Officers.
